Grand Mesa isn’t a neighborhood in the traditional sense: it’s a high plateau rising above 10,000 feet that sits roughly 45 minutes from Grand Junction and feels like a completely different world.

Up on the Mesa, you’re in forests, surrounded by over 300 alpine lakes, and looking out at views that stretch across the valley far below. In summer it’s a reliable escape from the heat of the desert floor. Temperatures cool down significantly, the fishing is excellent, and the hiking ranges from easy lake walks to serious backcountry routes. In winter, the Mesa has solid cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and the road up provides access to Powderhorn Mountain Resort.
Some people own cabins or seasonal properties on the Mesa, and for that purpose it’s excellent. As a year-round full-time residence it’s a harder proposition: roads can be difficult in winter and the distance from services adds up. But as a place to own a piece of land for weekends and summers, or as a regular escape for Grand Valley residents, the Grand Mesa is one of the genuinely special things about living in this part of Colorado.
